Job Description

Primary role purpose:

The position of UT Senior Systems Engineer is  within the BGAN Radio Module (BRM) team, part of the User Terminal Enablers group within Inmarsat’s CTO division. This team is responsible for the management of manufacturing partner activities involving User Terminal (UT) Enablers design, development and verification testing ultimately leading to the grant of Inmarsat Type Approval or Certification allowing the enabler and/or user terminals to operate in Inmarsat’s networks, both operational and under development.

 The Senior Systems Engineer will   support  the BRM engineering technical lead  to carry out the BRM in life management activities of the BRM and management of the BRM development partner  in the  ongoing design, development, verification, system integration and operational support related to the BRM. The role will also require providing technical support to, and coordination with  internal stakeholders and external partners developing terminal products that use the BRM, to ensure successful and timely development of terminal  products based on the BRM.  

The BRM is a key enabler for Inmarsat’s L Band terminal development future with manufacturing partners. Inmarsat’s legacy terminal developments required a substantial knowledge of the radio air interface to create a terminal. The introduction of the BRM allows Inmarsat’s terminal integrator partners to have a rapid access to market with a wider variety of terminal products. Inmarsat holds the IP rights, development responsibility and manufacturing responsibility for the BRM. The BRM development is accomplished through a single engineering subcontracted organization. The BRM secures the future of high value and low cost BGAN terminals to support the BGAN market.

The role will require co-ordination with a wide range of other project teams both within and external to Inmarsat to establish/maintain requirements for the BRM. The successful candidate will be required to represent Inmarsat as the technical expert in meetings with the BRM development subcontractor and must be capable of dealing confidently with experts in similar and different disciplines.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

To support the BRM engineering manager in the following;

  • Hardware/software release activities of the BRM development subcontractor.
  • Agreement and implementation of new BRM requirements with the development subcontractor.
  • Reporting on the progress of ongoing BRM activities. This includes administration of meetings with the BRM development partner, reporting internally within Inmarsat, and management of the schedule both internally and with the partner.
  • Support other team members with details of the BRM in the support of terminal manufacturers.


Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
  • Good knowledge of hardware in a maritime environment
  • Good knowledge of hardware in a ground fixed or transportable environment
  • Good knowledge of hardware in an aviation environment
  • Good knowledge of hardware development including RF design.
  • Good knowledge of 3G air interface technologies as this is the base of the BGAN network.
  • Good knowledge of software development and engineering techniques
  • Good knowledge of RF measurements and testing methods.
  • Good knowledge of satellite communications systems.


Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • 3G experience: design, test, qualification, evaluation
  • Working knowledge of link budget, receiver and fading simulations
  • Inmarsat and other satellite communications systems.
  • Data communications protocols (TCP/IP, IPSec, PPP).
  • Terrestrial Mobile communication (GSM, GPRS, UMTS, LTE).
  • Network protocol analyser tools (e.g. wireshark).
  • Knowledge of DSP implementation and architecture.
