Job Description

Inmarsat is seeking a Technical Author on an initial 6 month contract to assist with developing and maintaining internal and customer-facing documentation for the various Products and Services that Inmarsat provides to its customers.

The successful candidate will divide their time in a 50-50 split between the following:

  1. Document (from a High and Low Level Perspective) – for various internal audiences - the detailed platform and shore-side architecture design and infrastructure for a plug-and-play, non-intrusive virtualisation device.


You will work closely with Software Developers, DevOps Engineers, Software, Infrastructure, and Network Architects, Product Owners, and members of an external Agile consultancy, within an Agile software development framework, to develop, validate and maintain the required high- and low-level content in Confluence.


  1. Work within the Documentation Delivery team to assist with developing and maintaining internal and customer-facing documentation for Inmarsat’s wide range of existing hardware- and software-based Products and Services which operate in the Ku-, L-, and Ka-Band satellite communication spectrums.


You will work closely with Product Managers in the wider Inmarsat Product Group to develop and maintain such documentation, according to defined local and corporate documentation standards.

Job Requirements

Key attributes must include:

  • Previous experience of developing user documentation, whether as a Technical Author or as a significant aspect of an unrelated technically-focused role
  • A keen eye for detail, an enquiring mind, and the ability to elicit information from a wide range of stakeholders
  • A flexible, ‘can-do’ attitude
  • Demonstrating a high standard of written English
  • Experience of working with Software Developers and virtualisation technologies
  • Being able to manage your own workload with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work to tight and challenging deadlines
  • Experience of using Confluence Wikis, and the Microsoft Office applications suite, i.e., Word; Excel; PowerPoint; Visio

Desirable skills and experience include:

  • Some experience with developing and/or using and/or documenting Satellite Communications-related products and services would be preferable, but is not essential
  • Experience of using MadCap Flare and JIRA
  • Experience of working within an Agile framework
