Job Description

Primary role purpose:

The Satellite Infrastructure Team is part of the Space Segment department under the Inmarsat Chief Technology Officer (CTO) division. One of the team’s main goal is to model the traffic growth expected by all Inmarsat Business Units by modelling traffic forecast and assessing different satellite and payload solutions with the aim to provide demand and capacity maps. A key aspect is to understand all the drivers involved in mobile traffic and satellite system modelling and assess their impact on satellite deployment strategy by applying smart thinking and developing efficient coding algorithms.  The outcomes of the modelling will be translated into recommendations for new satellite procurement, third party leasing opportunities as well as current fleet optimisation.

The successful candidate will work on the Traffic Forecast Tool (TFT) development and operations, focusing on understanding the complexity of the technical and business aspects behind it: developing new functionalities, guaranteeing continuous TFT improvement and performing and interpreting traffic analysis. You will be part of a supportive, dynamic and creative team, working on challenging modelling problems, and contributing to Inmarsat strategical decisions. This role will have exposure to and contact with senior members of various divisions across Inmarsat. The individual will have the opportunity to prepare and present analysis results to influential business leaders and therefore should be comfortable to do so.

In this role you will work closely with the other members of the Space Segment team and many parts of the organisation such as the different business units to understand our customers future needs, the financial teams to understand the economic commitments involved and the operations teams to understand the resources management aspects of our networks and satellites. This role will allow you to gather transversal knowledge of the key drivers engaged in the Inmarsat decision making process for satellite infrastructure strategy.  You should have a blend of satellite systems knowledge, business curiosity, software coding and modelling skills. You will have a willingness to work hands-on with a flexible attitude and the drive to continue to make the TFT a fundamental business intelligence capability.   A track record of working with globally distributed teams and meeting established deadlines for program milestones isdesirable.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Gain knowledge and expertise with the Traffic Forecast Tool to become a subject matter expert. You will become a key point of contact for all traffic forecast-related matters.
  • Rigorous and timely delivery of new or enhanced functionality, managing the tool using best practice approaches in terms of documentation, development and testing:
    • Continual improvement: bug-fixing, efficiency and maintenance of the tool
    • Modelling advanced payloads and real-time resource allocation management systems
    • Integration and validation of new data inputs and requirements
    • Test philosophy and system architecture (unit and system tests). Develop, integrate and document tests functions for critical tool modules.
    • Innovative thinking for tool enhancement
    • Support other team members with their tasks
  • Interface with stakeholders; responsible to capture, update and track requirements and translate into qualitative and quantitative insights for the Space Segment team.
  • Run, validate and prepare presentations for traffic analysis under different satellite system solutions.
  • Leverage on the work already done by the team to deploy the tool on a secured server, setting-up a cloud computing architecture.


Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • STEM or Computer Science degree or equivalent
  • Experience with modelling languages (Python, Matlab, R) and simulation/optimisation tools implementation
  • Demonstrable capability to successfully deliver quality and on-time work
  • Ability to work independently and flexibly, organizing and leading the execution of tasks across multiple internal teams with a hands-on and pro-active mentality
  • High motivation, curiosity and commitment when managing complex tasks
  • Ability to communicate complex contexts in a simple way and raise action points with clarity in the presence of senior management
  • Ability to work with cross functional teams
  • Excellent spoken and written English.


Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Inmarsat satellites, products and services
  • Software development and design methodologies
  • Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to visualize large geo and time dependent data sets, experience with all kinds of data visualization software and or libraries
  • Collaborative coding (Git and GitHub) communicating in a pro-active manner about the various updates.
  • Multi-cultural awareness; experience of working in, and with, a wide variety of cultures in a global environment.
  • Note that the position will require occasional travel or work outside normal business hours due to the global environment Inmarsat operates in.
