Job Description

Primary role purpose:

This role covers the procurement and long term development of software tools and systems used within SSRM. These tools are used to monitor and manage the satellite communications resources efficiently whilst maintaining a high Quality of Service to customers of all services (both L Band, S Band and Ka Band). Whilst the Systems Analyst will routinely use these tools, his main area of responsibility lies with their development and extension as well as with the development and/or procurement of new tools to support Spectrum Engineering department. Our current suite of software tools address the following functions:

  • Monitoring traffic and congestion levels
  • Monitoring signal eleval and quality (MONICS and SSMS5)
  • Localisation of RF interference (ILS)
  • Synthesising customised beams to support specialised lease demands
  • Configuring the Ka Band satellites to steer beams and optimise traffic throughput

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

Technical management of the SSMS5 monitoring system procurement, which is scheduled to deliver an integrated L Band sugnal monitoring system by the end of 2018. Subsequently configure and administer this system.

Liaise with CTO and colleagues within SSRM to determine and document the requirements for future management tools related to GX5, Inmarsat 6 and future satellite systems.

Prototype and develop ad hoc software tools to address the operational needs of the department as the needs arise.

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • A Bachelors Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering or equivalent and experience in a relevant communications environment.
  • Knowledge of spacecraft and ground station design and link budgets.
  • Background in software engineering and familiarity with database environments (SQL skills), UNIX or Linux operating system, MS Office 2007 and one programming language (preferably C++).
  • Fluent with Microsoft Office components
  • Willingness to learn new skills and be self-motivated
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to work under pressure and show flexibility
  • A co-operative but assertive personality
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
