Job Description

Primary role purpose:

Inmarsat empowers data-driven government operations, on the move, all around the world and has done so successfully for 35 years. The Inmarsat Global Government Business Unit (G2BU) is dedicated to delivering and developing services and solutions to meet the specific needs of these discerning and demanding customers for voice and data communications worldwide.   


With such extensive experience, for most customers the G2BU can develop rapidly develop solutions within days or weeks to even very complex challenges.  Where the requirement is sufficiently complex that it requires a period of extensive study or prototyping/development with the customer community over more than a year, it requires the creation of specialist bid and programme teams.

The mission of the Govsatcom Systems Engineer is to provide technical systems design and implementation support to one of the key opportunities in the strategic area for G2BU – the European Govsatcom programme.

The role will be responsible for the technical development of elements of the ESA Govsatcom Precursor programme as directed by the Govsatcom Programme Manager (PM) and/or Govsatcom Systems Design Authority (SDA). Other opportunities with EU entities such as EDA, EU Military Staff, Frontex and EMSA may need to be supported, as well as related Member State opportunities in collaboration with G2BU account teams.

Success in the role will be measured through developing a viable Govsatcom technical solution, maintenance of interfaces with members of the industrial consortium, working interfaces with Inmarsat CTO and COO, and developing relationships with the institutional customers (UKSA, ESA, EU, EU agencies).

The role is likely to require international travel in Europe on an occasional basis.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support to technical requirements definition for the Inmarsat Govsatcom Precursor programme.
  • Systems analysis, design and interface definition for the Govsatcom technical architecture.
  • Detailed design, COTS assessment and implementation of a distributed and secure Inmarsat Govsatcom network.
  • Detailed design and implementation of the Govsatcom infrastructure.
  • Systems administration of the Inmarsat Govsatcom hardware and software architecture (COTS Hardware, COTS Software, Bespoke Software).
  • Maintenance of necessary internal interfaces with CTO, COO, and other G2 account teams.
  • Support the Govsatcom PM and SDA on developing technical relationships with ESA, UK Space Agency, and the EU.
  • Identify and develop other opportunities in or related to the Govsatcom programme for Inmarsat. 
  • Other tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be required including support on other bids.


Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • An engineering degree or equivalent experience in developing complex technical solutions.
  • Demonstrable experience in an engineering role, preferable communications systems engineering or software development.
  • Network design and implementation with industry leading networking products and platforms such as Cisco.
  • IT infrastructure design and implementation with products such as those from IBM, VMWare, Windows, Linux, etc.
  • IT systems administration
  • Previous experience in technical aspects of satellite / carrier / IP services.
  • Good presentation and inter-personal skills.
  • Organised and diligent – committed to seeing activities and processes through.
  • High level of personal integrity, commitment to hard work and working in an open collaborative manner.
  • Fluent in English, writing and speaking.


Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Familiarity with Inmarsat products and services.
  • Software analysis, design and development.
  • Enterprise Architect and Use Cases
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office – Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Experience of working with space & defence primes or complex technology providers.
  • Previous experience working in a government or military organisation.
  • Fluency in additional languages.
