Job Description

Primary role purpose:

The primary purpose of the role is to configure, analyse and monitor the Operational Global Xpress Network anticipating potential performance issues and incidents while providing support to the customers.

The role is essential in managing the operations of the Global Xpress network on an end-to-end basis, including satellite routers, air interface, and all architectural Hub components of the Radio Access Network.

Additionally, the GX Operations Systems Engineer will also have to interface externally with manufacturers as well as business partners, giving priority to resolve outstanding issues and system bugs in order to meet Inmarsat SLA’s availability. The engineer will be also responsible for providing operational technical support to any Customer Care and Business Units network related enquiry.

The Operations Systems Engineer should be a self-motivated individual with a good understanding of complex technical environments, excellent analytical skills, problem solving and team building skills.

The role encompasses also a 24/7 on-call support to the Network Operations Centre to tackle any escalations issues and major network incidents.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Detailed analysis of network incidents and trends to identify the root causes and proactively anticipate potential issues.
  • Raise case supports to vendors following the resolution closely and actively participate in collaborative forums to discuss solutions.
  • Critical diagnosis of faults and categorising whether new incidents are related to known issues and existing problems.
  • Support bug fixes deployment and new features implementation with minimum traffic impact.
  • Initiate actions to fix interruptions to service caused by errors or system faults.
  • Verify problems resolved after permanent fix has been applied by monitoring the related issue.
  • Produce traffic analysis and network performance reports regularly to highlight trends to share with Business Unit teams and SLA report partners.
  • Assist and provide input into the Continuous Service Improvement process and ensure the Change and Configuration processes are effective and provide benefit for all integrated ITSM processes.
  • On-call duty, providing 24/7 operational support to the Global Xpress network globally.
  • Work with the User Terminal and relevant Business Units to validate new terminal type characteristics and operability into the GX Network.
  • Document and create technical operational procedures to enhance response time in order to configure, analyse and troubleshoot the different GX Network subsystems.

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering, Diploma in Electronics or equivalent
  • Excellent analytical skills and multi-tasking problem solving.
  • High level of self-motivation and ability to work well within the team and across different departments and external parties.
  • Resourceful – utilise all tools, expertise and knowledge bases to investigate and resolve problems.
  • Experience and good understanding of iDirect Velocity Networks and Pulse platform.
  • Excellent ability to understand new software and able to work efficiently with many ongoing projects
  • Good knowledge of DVB-S2/ACM, ATDMA standards, modulation and coding.
  • Experience and understanding of protocol analysing tools and RF measurement techniques.
  • Preferably practical knowledge of Cisco switches and routers, including configuration and system commands.
  • Working experience with Linux based systems and scripting capabilities.
  • Good understanding and experience of operational development in a business driven environment.
  • Professional attitude, strong attention to detail, process oriented and organised.
  • Clear and concise communication skills; ability to articulate technical material to both a technical and non-technical audience
