Primary role purpose:

As a pioneering member of the Incubation team, you will lead the end to end identification, assessment and incubation of new digital business opportunities. You will be expected to take an entrepreneurial approach to your work seeking out opportunities proactively and making connections between different external partners, internal capabilities and potential new customers to create innovative new business that generate revenue in excess of >$10M each in the medium to long term.

Once an opportunity is identified you will incubate it by leading a matrixed team who will engage with partners, customers and developers to validate new product/business ideas through POCs and MVPs all the way to the first paying customer.

You will be an integral part of the embryonic Digital Incubation team who will support each other in the common pursuit of building what is a new sustainable business line for Inmarsat that takes advantage of its wealth of global assets. These activities will contribute to the diversification of Inmarsat’s revenue streams through profitable growth in the digital space.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the identification, assessment and development of new opportunities, through the early stage incubation process, primarily in the domain of digital innovation (IoT, data analytics, AI/ML, VAS). Each opportunity will aim to generate >$10M revenues per annum.
  • End-to-end ownership of early stage opportunities, planning and driving initiatives and the operational agenda of cross-functional teams in a matrix organisation including Product Specialists, Finance, Engineering, Operations, Legal and Business Units.
  • Perform market scouting activities (up to 20% of the time), interacting with early stage companies and corporates, to identify new areas of innovation and development as well as potential partners for Inmarsat to expand its product portfolio. This should lead to a rich pipeline of opportunities sourced externally.
  • Provide structure, directional clarity with a drive for fact-finding, data-driven decision making and intellectual rigour.
  • Either independently or in collaboration with business unit teams or central engineering teams (as appropriate):
    • Make decisions about which markets/customer segments to explore, use cases to prioritise and product features to develop as part of incubation process.
    • Develop of new business models, market assessments and business cases related to specific opportunities. 
    • Engage in customer validation in new verticals by running customer interviews, focus groups and other primary research activities.
    • Perform functional analysis of product requirements and engage with technical teams for development.
  • In collaboration with the digital Incubation team:
    • Recommend paths to success to Senior Management.
    • Support the delivery of the KPIs of the Incubation team, including revenue where appropriate.
    • Develop an updated digital strategic plan and roadmap
    • Thought leadership and speaker at industry conferences, raising Inmarsat’s public profile in the digital innovation space.

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Solid expertise in a combination of strategy, business development, product development in a B2B environment
  • Degree (or equivalent) in an Engineering discipline and an MBA or equivalent business experience
  • Experience in the satellite, telecom and/or tech industry
  • A strategic and analytical mind, able to approach problems holistically, from multiple perspectives and envisaging multiple scenarios and alternative solutions.
  • Ability to thrive in an uncertain, ambiguous, entrepreneurial environment requiring adaptability and agility, by bringing structure, directional clarity and a drive for fact-finding, data-driven decision making and intellectual rigour.
  • Excellent ability to extract information, analyse, problem solve, conceptualise and select the best solutions swiftly and to inspire others to do so.
  • Ability to address a wide range of topics across strategy, commercial, marketing, finance, legal (e.g., business modelling, market analysis, product marketing/4Ps, messaging, business case, risk, pricing, channel and go-to-market strategy, etc.).
  • Ability to navigate internal networks, get buy-in and alignment from multiple internal and external senior stakeholders, balancing the needs of individuals often with conflicting interests.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and ability to network outside the organisation and develop a valuable web of contacts to collaborate with to deliver objectives.
  • Ability to engage and manage external consultants, and/or a team of internal analysts
  • Ability to act as a catalyst, identify internal resources to support the opportunities throughout incubation process and establish virtual team(s).
  • Ability to negotiate contracts with partners and customers towards the development of MVPs and POCs. Ability to manage these partnerships.
  • Ability to understand new technical fields quickly
  • A customer focused, market driven, innovative, naturally curious, entrepreneurial individual.
  • Strong familiarity with lean start up innovation methodologies.
  • Track record of integrity and commercial acumen
  • Project management/planning skills.
  • Professional proficiency in English. Additional languages are an asset.

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience working in a start up with exposure to the full start up lifecycle
  • Understanding of the maritime or aviation industry.
  • Courage to defend one’s convictions in the face of adversity.
