Job Description

Primary role purpose:

The in incumbent for this position will be part of an existing cross-functional team focusing on service assurance, playing a leading role in the evolution of our service support systems to deliver operational excellence.

He/she will have extensive experience in cloud platforms in general and have an in-depth experience in designing, implementing and maintaining Google Cloud Platform (GCP) based solutions. The individual will leverage the latest GCP tools to design and implement a Cloud based platform solution to strengthen our operational support systems, e.g. service monitoring, analytics and machine learning tools. Within the Service Assurance Division, he/she will be a subject matter expert in all matters relating to the application, design, implementation, use and management of cloud-computing tools. Working with key stakeholders across Operations, the individual will be responsible for establishing the “Cloud” strategy for our operations support systems as well as responsible for its architecture and roadmap. It includes actively participating in its implementation, delivery and in-service management.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with cross-divisional business, technical and operational stakeholders to capture short, medium and long-term requirements associated with leveraging modern cloud-computing technologies and solutions to evolve existing operational support systems and tools.
  • Translate business and technical requirements into a Service Support Operations Cloud (SSOC) proposition using Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with focus on service monitoring, analytics and machine learning.
  • Design, implement and bring into operation a fit for purpose SSOC infrastructure, with careful attention to utilization, availability, capacity, scalability, performance, costs and security.
  • Work with Operations and other subject matter experts as required ensuring an effective design and use of GCP’s cloud and hosting services.
  • Application of DevOps framework during the design and implementation of the SSOC to achieve an effective and efficient solution for the intended application.
  • Identify and resolve any problems with the cloud-computing infrastructure and provide leadership to the resolution of incidents and problems.
  • Collaborate with and provide expertise/guidance to other operational teams inside and outside Service Assurance on cloud-computing best practices and tools.

 

Essential Cloud Computing Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge, experience and skills in the following areas are highly desirable:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Business or a related field.
  • Excellent knowledge of GCP and associated tools.
  • Software engineering proficiency at developing, implementing and maintaining cloud-ready applications, such as those built on open standards, with attention to monitoring capabilities and security aspects.
  • Experience with the design of data platforms with the right combination of data services including BigQuey, BigTable, Datastore.
  • Experience with large data streaming and batch ingest using GCP services such as Dataflow, Dataproc, PubSub as well as Hadoop, Spark, Apache Beam.
  • Experience with front-end analytics and data science integration with data platforms such as BigQuery, both within the GCP Suite (e.g. data studio) and third party analytics products.
  • Good understanding of what is required from the cloud platform to support the activities of data scientists, and how best to optimise a GCP based solution for user friendliness.
  • Experience with the implementation of solutions and user interfaces using App Engine and Cloud Functions.
  • Strong understanding of containers generally and Kubernetes specifically.
  • Experience with GCP live monitoring solutions and how best to design for operations.
  • Strong understanding of secure networking within the GCP environment.
  • Good understanding of data security and privacy (including GDPR) aspects and its impact on cloud platform design.

 Desirable Managerial Experience/Skills:

  • Innovation skills and vision -Ability to understand and articulate how cloud computing related technologies can improve any particular aspect of day-to-day operations
  • Communication, leadership and project management skills -Ability and record of accomplishment of accomplishments in articulating how the business will benefit from cloud computing, obtaining stakeholders support and marshalling the required support.
  • Vendor relationship and negotiating skills -Ability to assert Inmarsat’s best interests when dealing with vendors, for example with respect to issues of costs, service interruptions, service-level agreements, data availability and physical location.  
  • Architectural, analytical and planning skills - Ability and record of accomplishment in providing leadership in the development of the technical solution or offering, in particular in translating business needs into technical requirements. Ability to identify gaps, strategic and financial impact, including the risk profile in technical solutions and third-party offerings.

 Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in the design of cloud related solutions as part of operational support systems for telecoms services will be a bonus.
  • Good appreciation of other cloud solution offerings beyond GCP.
  • Wide knowledge of alternative technologies, in particular from the open source community.
  • Experience / familiarity with machine learning solutions.
