Role Purpose

The Cloud & Infrastructure Operations Manager role is a critical role within Group IT and a key position responsible for managing Inmarsat’s new cloud infrastructure operating model and supporting the adoption of an agile delivery model. This role takes full accountability for the Global IT Infrastructure and Operations team and is an integral part of major programme deliveries both infrastructure and business led into a cloud environment automating and instilling agile processes.

The role is accountable for ensuring the right cloud and hosting services are designed, planned and implemented and then continually available to Inmarsat at the best possible price and influencing the adoption and consumption of those services to deliver required performance and availability.  This will require working with Strategy and Architecture designs to continually review industry and market trends and the Inmarsat needs and capabilities to develop and maintain a clear roadmap for the development and retirement of services. As a service owner the role is accountable for assessing and managing risks to the services including sponsorship and delivery of mitigating actions. 

The role will identify, define and sponsor necessary Infrastructure led change to keep the Cloud and Hosting services up to date and ensure benefits are realised. The role will also be expected to proactively identify and adopt automation throughout the IT Operations space and look to identify disruptive solutions and service capabilities to help drive a transformation culture.

In moving to a more automated manner for application delivery and support this role will be instrumental to ensure the success of a DevOps culture.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the success of building and maintaining a world-class cloud infrastructure, with key objectives in the areas utilization, availability, capacity, scalability, performance and security management.
  • Championing the optimisation of Cloud and Hosting performance and cost
  • Creating and executing roadmaps that direct the movement between current and future states (services, technologies, sourcing, etc.)
  • Lead and champion the change initiative for the IT Operations team through the transition from an on premise data center model to a cloud based Data Center as a Service model ensuring team members are engaged and relevant development plans identified and implemented
  • Driving significant improvement in Inmarsat’s Cloud and Hosting Landscape over the next 2-3 years to support the Digital transformation, delivering greater resilience, flexibility and major efficiency improvements.
  • Managing technical performance of the Cloud and Hosting services and collaborating with other application and infrastructure service owners to ensure robust and future proof services.
  • Planning, including capacity, demand and performance needs over a 1-5 year horizon.
  • Lead the development and ongoing management of compute and storage technology roadmaps
  • Ensure all business unit and support teams are making the right technical choices for Inmarsat’s needs.  Work closely with supplier and vendor management to drive the right outcomes for Inmarsat.
  • Working collaboratively with the enterprise architecture team to ensure effective designs and application of the cloud and hosting services.
  • Technical escalation point for Major Incidents and service breaches.
  • Identify and resolve problems with the services and support the resolution of problems in dependent services.
  • Collect, analyse and report on availability, capacity and performance metrics for infrastructure health.
  • Maintain and track environment utilization to maximize effectiveness and cost efficiency
  • Maintain performance and capacity at target operating thresholds aligned to best practices.
  • Manage and coordinate the provisioning of cloud and co-lo based data center services
  • Devise and support effective Disaster Recovery plans including regular testing activities
  • Coordinate and implement security strategies developed by the Inmarsat Security team
  • Participate in the management of the monthly vulnerability scans and coordinate the remediation of identified vulnerabilities
  • Interface with and provide expertise/guidance to other teams inside and outside of the IT organization, such as Customer Support, Networks and 3rd Party Vendors
  • Ensure group adherence to and help mature operational processes (ITIL) and compliance controls.
  • Lead problem resolution process to root cause, take initiative in identifying and fixing broken processes in the infrastructure environment.
  • Support the on boarding process of new requirements to ensure fit for purpose cloud specifications are adopted thereby adopting the right cost for the solution
  • Ensure group compliance with all security controls and processes and adherence to security policies and standards.
  • Report any potential security weakness, exposure or suspicious indications to the Security Operations team.
  • Ensure DevOps and automation is applied to facilitate an effective and efficient cloud environment for application delivery and support
  • Manage and lead a 20+ person global team primarily based in London and St John’s, Canada
  • Take a proactive review of the current and evolving IT estate suggesting recommendations for improvement bearing in mind the move to cloud based infrastructure and a Co-Lo model.
  • Lead the adoption of an agile / DevOps operating model and developing a new mindset within the team to work in a boundary less environment
  • Be instrumental is ensuing the core infrastructure cloud elements are built out to enable a major business programme delivery
  • Play a key stakeholder role in the datacenter as a service workstream
  • Deliver key KPI reporting within a wider reporting remit
  • Working in conjunction with the Configuration Manager play a key role in ensuring the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) is accurate and up-to-date
  • Work closely with the Vendor Manager for cloud performance and SLA management
  • Ensure strong collaboration with the Corporate Network team
  • Ensure discovery tools and patch management is maintained at the highest standards.
  • Responsible for current IT applications such as MS Exchange, Citrix, VMware, Netapp storage, Net backup, Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB, Linux and Unix environments
  • Deliver high level topology and documentation material
  • Multimillion dollar Budget responsibility


Formal Education & Certification

  • University degree (or equivalent) or college diploma in Information Technology or equivalent work experience.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Systems administration and datacentre experience
  • Technical leadership experience (including project management experience)
  • Managing IT Operations in a cloud environment.
  • Working in an Agile / DevOps environment
  • Proven history of leading/mentoring Windows and Unix/Linux system administrators
  • Proven experience leading support and strategy of an infrastructure environment
  • Strong understanding of Open source technologies
  • Strong understanding of DNS, DHCP, AD
  • Strong understanding of networking WAN/LAN
  • Experience with security monitoring / alerting tools
  • Experience in multi-datacentre environments
  • Experience in global transformation programmes
  • Experience with best practices such as ITIL V3
  • Experience with Security Frameworks (NIST, SSAE16 / SOC 1 Type II and ISO 27001)
  • Leading a team through change, i.e. from an IT on premise environment to the cloud working closely with a Systems Integrator.
  • Familiarity with IaaS/ PaaS/SaaS/xaaS and Co-Lo Cloud business models, user experience, and multi-tenancy architecture a plus
