Job Description

Primary role purpose:

As part of the Cloud & Infrastructure team within Group IT, you will be responsible for managing core infrastructure hosted under VMware vSphere, AWS and other cloud platforms as well as Inmarsat’s storage platforms.

The role will require collaboration with project teams to provide delivery, engineering and operational support on various projects within Inmarsat.

You will play a key role in the adoption and journey to the cloud, providing best practice guidance whilst supporting migration of virtual machines hosted in vSphere to AWS or other cloud platforms.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engineer, manage and support VMWare and Storage platforms including installation, configuration and tuning
  • Provide analysis of VMware and Storage environments, both physical and virtual, and undertake necessary actions to avoid deficiencies and interruptions of service
  • Engage in the development and ongoing maintenance of the GroupIT technology roadmap
  • Document infrastructure and work instructions for systems and applications hosted under VMWare stacks
  • Engage with the Solutions Designers to ensure that designs are in line with the needs of current and future platform requirements
  • Manage and provide current platform usage statistics and provide future project growth estimates
  • Provide knowledge sharing across the team to support the ongoing development of cross team operational support functions
  • Lead efforts towards storage consolidation and optimisation
  • Develop and maintain platform life cycle management methodology
  • Create, implement, and oversee policies and procedures to ensure consistent provisioning, uptime, regulatory compliance, and data protection
  • Serve as the virtualization and storage lead for resolving complex incidents and problems related to VMware and Storage systems
  • Respond to major incidents, on-calls and conference calls in support of IT business processes
  • Configure and maintain data replication, mirrors, and snapshots between primary and offsite locations for high availability and D/R purposes
  • Develop backup and recovery procedures
  • Participate in recovery testing and D/R exercises

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Technical expertise in VMWare vSphere 6.x
  • Expert technical expertise in Storage systems management – NetApp
  • Experience engineering and managing fiber channel SAN environments
  • Experience with Datacentre migration, Cloud migration, integration and consolidation efforts.
  • Strong Linux infrastructure background and hands on exposure to Cloud and automation technologies.
  • Automation experience leveraging tools such as Puppet, Ansible, Salt, or SCCM
  • Professional scripting experience with languages such as PowerShell, Python, and BASH
  • Vendor certifications from VMware, Red Hat, and NetApp are a plus
  • A proficiency in Linux systems administration and server configuration (e.g. CentOS/RHEL)
  • Understanding of public cloud services, namely AWS
